DigitalOcean Alternatives in 2026: More RAM and Bandwidth per Dollar

DigitalOcean made cloud servers simple: clean dashboard, good docs, predictable monthly prices. People look for a DigitalOcean alternative mostly for one reason: once an app needs 8 GB of RAM or more, the monthly bill grows quickly, and bandwidth allowances are modest. This guide compares DigitalOcean’s Droplet prices with the main alternatives, checked on each provider’s own pricing page on 26 October 2026, and explains when the cheaper option is worth the trade-offs.

Short answer: for small servers, DigitalOcean and Vultr cost about the same. For bigger servers, a VPS provider that sells larger fixed plans gives far more RAM per dollar. If you don’t want to run a server at all, container hosting with Git deploys is the cheaper way to host a single app.

DigitalOcean Alternatives Compared (Around 8 GB of RAM)

Comparing the size where most production apps land makes the differences clear:

DigitalOcean Basic Droplet48 GiB160 GiB SSD5,000 GiB$48/mo
Vultr Regular Performance48 GB160 GB SSD4 TB$40/mo
Vultr High Performance (AMD)Smaller sizes from 1 vCPU / 1 GB—NVMeFrom 2 TBFrom $6/mo
RackUp Developer VPS812 GB150 GB NVMe32 TB$35/mo

Vultr prices from vultr.com/pricing, checked 26 October 2026. Hetzner is another popular choice, especially in Europe; its cloud plans start at €5.99 a month excluding VAT, but several sizes showed as currently unavailable on its site when we checked.

Vultr

Vultr is the closest like-for-like alternative: hourly billing, many regions, a similar API and a wider range of small sizes, starting from a $2.50 IPv6-only plan. Prices are a little lower than DigitalOcean at most sizes, and its High Performance line uses NVMe storage. Choose it if you want a DigitalOcean-style cloud with slightly better pricing.

Hetzner

Hetzner is known for low prices and generous traffic in its EU locations, with data centres in Germany, Finland, Singapore and the USA. Traffic allowances are lower in its Singapore region. It’s a strong choice for European workloads; check availability, because some plan sizes were out of stock when we checked.

A Fixed-Plan VPS: RackUp Developer VPS

DigitalOcean and Vultr price by the hour and scale every size proportionally. A VPS sold as larger fixed plans can give much more per dollar at the top end. RackUp’s Developer VPS has:

  • 8 vCPU, 12 GB RAM and 150 GB NVMe storage.

  • 32 TB of monthly bandwidth.

  • Full root access and a dedicated IP address.

  • $35 a month, the same price at renewal, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

  • Larger sizes: 16 vCPU and 32 GB RAM for $69.95 a month, or 18 vCPU and 96 GB RAM for $99 a month.

The trade-off: it’s a monthly server, not an hourly cloud instance, so it suits long-running apps rather than servers you create and destroy by the hour. There’s no managed Kubernetes or object storage product alongside it.

Don’t Need a Whole Server? Container Hosting

Many apps on a $6–$12 Droplet are a single Node.js, Django, Laravel or .NET app plus a database. You don’t need to patch Ubuntu for that. RackUp Cloud Apps run your app from a Dockerfile or supported stack, deploy on every Git push, and include a private MongoDB, MySQL or Postgres database on Cloud Starter ($2.44 a month, 1 GB RAM) and Cloud Pro ($5.69 a month, 2 GB RAM).

What You Give Up When You Leave DigitalOcean

  • Managed extras: managed databases, Spaces object storage, load balancers and Kubernetes in one account.

  • Hourly billing: useful for short-lived servers and testing.

  • Docs and tutorials: DigitalOcean’s community tutorials are excellent, and they work on any Ubuntu server anyway.

If you use several of those products, staying may be simpler. If you run a few long-lived servers, a cheaper VPS saves real money.

How to Move From DigitalOcean

  1. Set up the new server with the same OS version.

  2. Copy files with rsync -avz over SSH and databases with pg_dump or mysqldump.

  3. Recreate firewall rules; see how to open ports on a VPS.

  4. Test using the new IP, then lower your DNS TTL and switch the records.

  5. Keep the old Droplet for a few days, then take a final snapshot and delete it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cheaper than DigitalOcean?
Vultr is slightly cheaper at most sizes (for example $40 a month for 4 vCPU and 8 GB, against DigitalOcean’s $48). Fixed-plan VPS providers can be cheaper still for larger servers, such as RackUp’s Developer VPS at $35 a month for 8 vCPU and 12 GB of RAM.

Is Vultr better than DigitalOcean?
They’re similar. Vultr has more small sizes and slightly lower prices; DigitalOcean has a polished dashboard, more managed products and excellent tutorials.

How much bandwidth does a DigitalOcean Droplet include?
From 500 GiB a month on the $4 Droplet up to 5,000 GiB on the $48 Droplet, with free inbound transfer (checked 26 October 2026).

Can I move a Droplet to another provider?
Not as an image in most cases. Set up a new server and copy your files and databases with rsync and database dumps; it’s usually cleaner anyway.

Do I need a VPS to host one app?
No. Container hosting runs a single app with a database and Git deploys, without server administration, for less than a small Droplet.

Get More Server for Your Money
